FAQs

How has COVID impacted i3?

While COVID has devastated our communities and world, it has also created new opportunities for innovative changemakers to think proactively about creating solutions to combat not only the virus along but also the systemic inequities the pandemic has shed light onto. All i3 programming will be virtual. However, we have added new programming such as improved Coffee Coachigns, a revamped Pitching Workshop, an additional Pitching Open Mic, and a Female Founders Luncheon to create meaningful touchpoints for interactions throughout the process. We recognize each student’s home and living accommodations may look different. Should you have any concerns about your ability to fully participate in the challenge, please contact i3 Student Director, Georgia Messinger at gmessinger@college.harvard.edu. Let’s remember now is a time to take care of each other, uplift those that are in need, and build like the future of our world depends on it (because it does!).

Who is eligible for i3?

Typically, all currently enrolled Harvard College degree candidates in good academic standing are eligible to apply to i3. Proposed projects must be the original work of the eligible student and not part of any faculty sponsored research. Due to the pandemic and an increased number of students on leave of absence, for 2021 students who have previously enrolled in Harvard College but are currently on leave of absence may also apply.

How far along does my business need to be to apply?

You just need to have a problem you’re passionate about and a commitment to creating the solution. Applications open on January 18 and don’t close until February 26, so you better get to work! i3 is a challenge, and we love to see founders who take initiative to fully participate in all aspects of our programming and are open to feedback.

How can I apply for i3?

Applications for 2021 have now closed. Please check back for more information about 2022 applications soon.

I’m a student founder. How can I get help or feedback on my i3 application?

Please check out our programming tab for information on Coffee Coachings where you can get matched with a mentor to help you with your application.

How does the overall application process work, and how are winners selected?

Online applications are due on February 26. Dozens of expert judges virtually review applications, evaluating for innovation, opportunity, implementation, team, and “wow-factor”. From there, a selection of 10-20 semifinalists are made across two categories 1) social/public, 2) commercial. Pitches and progress updates are evaluated at the semifinalist event on April 8. Between initial application submission and the semifinalist event we’re looking for teams that have immersed themselves in the spirit of the Innovation Challenge, attending programming, taking feedback, learning from their peers, submitting a compelling progress report, and delivering a winning pitch. A smaller group of judges will then evaluate teams holistically to select 1-2 winners across each track, and TECH may also issue an additional wild card award as well. Grant prizes will range from $5-20k.

Does i3 take equity in my company?

Nope! It may seem too good to be true, but our true motivation to educate, connect, and inspire student founders. This is an IP-free space and all cash awards are equity-free.

What are the prizes?

In addition to all our educational programming, opportunities for mentorship, and the awesome community of student founders you’re joining, we offer equity-free grants ranging from $5-20k and free AWS credits up to $15k. The priceless prize of i3 hopefully is all the learnings and connections you make along the way! Never forget your network is your net worth, and a startup founder is a lifelong learner.
